Independents present

Synchronicity Space asked small, independent companies and publishers to showcase an artist they were excited about. Independents present is an exhibition resulting in our request to these companies to group curate an exhibition. Synchronicity Space will host an opening reception Saturday, May 15 from 7 to 11pm. The exhibition will run from May 15th and close June 5th.

These companies and artists include:

Nieves presents artist, Jay Nelson
Nieves is an independent publishing house based in Zurich, Switzerland.
Founded in 2001, Nieves' focus is on publishing Artists' Books and Zines.

Ooga Booga presents artist, Maxwell Krivitzky
Ooga Booga is a store in Chinatown Los Angeles that specializes in artist books, art, music, and fashion. Since opening in 2004, they have also hosted concerts, film screenings, book launches, readings, mini-exhibitions, reading rooms, window installations in their space and in satellite projects around the world. The aim of Ooga Booga is to support independent creative culture in its various forms.

Drippy Bone Books presents artist, Shannon Keller
Drippy Bone Books is a publishing project run by artists Kristy Foom, Mario Zoots, and Keenan Marshall Keller out of Amsterdam, Denver and Los Angeles. Drippy Bone Books releases underground art zines, comix, and promotes the distribution of art multiples. The name, Drippy Bone Books, was inspired by the comic Oops Goops drawn by David Magdaleno and Brian Bamps of Los Angeles. Editions are curated by a single person and worked on by the group. Focusing on limited edition releases of explosively creative underground work; the artists involved are as diverse as the mediums they use. Treading the lines between the beautiful and the ugly, the intellectual and moronic, the optimistic and apathetic, the primitive and the modern...

Penny Ante presents artist, Jed Ochmanek
Penny-Ante is an independent book publishing company based in Los Angeles. Founded in 2005, Penny-Ante has since released three large volumes compiling art & literary works from a wide range of artists, writers, and musicians. Starting in 2010, Penny-Ante will be expanding its output to other forms of art-based product including limited run art prints, DVDs, vinyl records, and cassettes. Past contributors to Penny-Ante's "Book #1", "Book #2", and "Three" include Alice Bag (The Bags), Billy Bragg, Bill Callahan (Smog), Robin Crutchfield (Dark Day/DNA), Jad Fair (Half Japanese), Mick Farren (The Deviants), artist Terence Koh, Bettina Koster (Malaria!), Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth), and artist Jason Yates (Fast Friends, Inc.) to only name a few.

Kaugummi presents artist, Rasmus Svensson
Kaugummi is an independent publishing house and a label based in Rennes, France.
They publish and promote artist books, zines, and records focusing mainly on contemporary drawing, photography and psych sounds, since 2005. Kaugummi was created and is run by Bartolomé Sanson.

Narrow Books presents artist, Shawn Petersen
Narrow Books is an independent publisher headquartered in Los Angeles. Our most recent books include Hey Fudge, a sweeping collection of drawings, paintings, installations, and sketchbook pages by the artist Travis Millard; Eat Hell, a trio of stories by award-winning author Joseph Mattson; and Two Letters Vol. 2, our second anthology featuring dozens of contributors offering unique art and writing.
