Synchronicity Space is pleased to announced the exhibition, “Man, Such As We Know Him, Is A Computer,” which will be on display in Mastodon Mesa at the Pacific Design Center from January 20 - February 27. This exhibition showcases artists whose work explores the relationships between technology, the culture of the internet’s past, present and future, and the questionable need for viewing art in the context of a gallery.

The exhibition features an installation by artist, Spencer Longo, transforming the interior of the gallery space to communicate the internet’s ability to transform itself into a physical space. Incorporating sound, projected images as well as pieces on paper to fill the space, the artist seeks for the audience to be viscerally taken over.

The main exhibition showcases a group of artists that make work in different media and multi-media addressing technology in their work. We will be exhibiting an array of work that includes sound, video, websites, drawings, and paintings. With the increasing proliferation of the internet worldwide, we have experienced a global connection and rapid cultural malleability unlike any other time period. These artists have found a way to adapt to the ever-changing current of our technological culture, either by commenting on it or exemplifying its benefits towards the creative process. The exhibition will be on display from January 20 to February 25, 2011.

Synchronicity Space is pleased to present an extremely jubilant event welcoming Bartolome Sanson and Felicia Atkinson into Los Angeles by way of France. We will host a night in order to praise the printed accomplishments of Kaugummi Books and the melodical accomplishments of our own LA based, Not Not Fun Records. Together, we will transform the gallery's interior space into a setting equally grandiose and convivial. Amanda of Not Not Fun (as well as Pocahaunted and LA Vampires) will be providing music for your ears and Bartolome will lend us Kaugummi publications for your relaxed perusal. Please join us for an elegant night of aural and visual adulation.

ABOUT GENERAL DELIGHT:
General Delight encompasses four film makers based in Los Angeles and New York who make comedy shorts. The films are provocative, absurd and euphoric. They describe their work as, “An aurora borealis Disneyland fireworks display with a swim up bar, free refills”. Their videos are a balance between high and low, as they explore issues of technology, sexuality, pop culture and how we try to transcend our own confines through fantasy, imagination and techno music.

Synchronicity Space asked small, independent companies and publishers to showcase an artist they were excited about. Independents present is an exhibition resulting in our request to these companies to group curate an exhibition. Synchronicity Space will host an opening reception Saturday, May 15 from 7 to 11pm. The exhibition will run from May 15th and close June 5th.

Nieves presents artist, Jay Nelson
Nieves is an independent publishing house based in Zurich, Switzerland.
Founded in 2001, Nieves' focus is on publishing Artists' Books and Zines.

Ooga Booga presents artist, Maxwell Krivitzky
Ooga Booga is a store in Chinatown Los Angeles that specializes in artist books, art, music, and fashion. Since opening in 2004, they have also hosted concerts, film screenings, book launches, readings, mini-exhibitions, reading rooms, window installations in their space and in satellite projects around the world. The aim of Ooga Booga is to support independent creative culture in its various forms.

Drippy Bone Books presents artist, Shannon Keller
Drippy Bone Books is a publishing project run by artists Kristy Foom, Mario Zoots, and Keenan Marshall Keller out of Amsterdam, Denver and Los Angeles. Drippy Bone Books releases underground art zines, comix, and promotes the distribution of art multiples. The name, Drippy Bone Books, was inspired by the comic Oops Goops drawn by David Magdaleno and Brian Bamps of Los Angeles. Editions are curated by a single person and worked on by the group. Focusing on limited edition releases of explosively creative underground work; the artists involved are as diverse as the mediums they use. Treading the lines between the beautiful and the ugly, the intellectual and moronic, the optimistic and apathetic, the primitive and the modern...

Penny Ante presents artist, Jed Ochmanek
Penny-Ante is an independent book publishing company based in Los Angeles. Founded in 2005, Penny-Ante has since released three large volumes compiling art & literary works from a wide range of artists, writers, and musicians. Starting in 2010, Penny-Ante will be expanding its output to other forms of art-based product including limited run art prints, DVDs, vinyl records, and cassettes. Past contributors to Penny-Ante's "Book #1", "Book #2", and "Three" include Alice Bag (The Bags), Billy Bragg, Bill Callahan (Smog), Robin Crutchfield (Dark Day/DNA), Jad Fair (Half Japanese), Mick Farren (The Deviants), artist Terence Koh, Bettina Koster (Malaria!), Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth), and artist Jason Yates (Fast Friends, Inc.) to only name a few.

Kaugummi is an independent publishing house and a label based in Rennes, France.
They publish and promote artist books, zines, and records focusing mainly on contemporary drawing, photography and psych sounds, since 2005. Kaugummi was created and is run by Bartolomé Sanson.

Narrow Books presents artist, Shawn Petersen
Narrow Books is an independent publisher headquartered in Los Angeles. Our most recent books include Hey Fudge, a sweeping collection of drawings, paintings, installations, and sketchbook pages by the artist Travis Millard; Eat Hell, a trio of stories by award-winning author Joseph Mattson; and Two Letters Vol. 2, our second anthology featuring dozens of contributors offering unique art and writing.

For this exhibition we will open submissions to every artist who would like to be involved.
We would love to see what everyone has to offer with your pet as the inspiration.

However, please follow our guidelines for submission.

-This show is about pets. Please keep the theme of the show in mind when deciding what work to present. We reserve the right to not accept any work that may be offensive or work that is not falling within the spirit of this exhibition.
-We are not limiting the work in terms of scale but please be conscious that small works are preferable.
-The work MUST be ready to hang on our wall. Please provide us with any special hanging instructions and hardware if necessary.
-Please drop off work on specified drop-off dates and times. Work will not be accepted otherwise unless prior arrangements are made.
-As soon as the show comes down please make arrangements with the gallery to pick up unsold work. We will not be responsible for storing artwork. The gallery will not take care of shipping costs to out of town artists.
-In the case your artwork is sold the night of the reception the gallery will take care of payment and shipping arrangements with the buyer.
-Please keep in mind while pricing your artwork the percentage split between artist, gallery and charity. The artist will take 50% of the sale, 30% will go to the gallery and 20% will go towards a charity focused on the care of animals. If you have a specific one in mind we will make payment to the charity of your choice.

Unleashed: The First Annual Los Angeles Pet Art Show

An art show of your pets, by your pets and for your pets. Los Angeles’ finest and most original artists come together to present a one day exhibition of paintings, drawings and sculptures inspired by man’s and woman’s best friends.

Humans and their pets are welcome to view these works Saturday May 8th from 12pm to 11pm. Several animal rescue services will be on hand with a fuzzy menagerie of furry art experts to guide you along. The Pet Art Show involves two of Los Angeles’ most off beat galleries located directly on opposite sides of Melrose Avenue.

Synchronicity Space at 4306 Melrose Avenue showcases creative expressions of sight and sound, imagined by artists looking for a place without limits, a place where "things just happen." Exhibitions have no definitive style or subject matter, the doors are left open to the most exciting art, music and other creative projects presented by local, national and global artists.

For over 173 years, The Fake Gallery, located at 4319 Melrose Avenue, has curated some of the finest fictitious artworks from many of the most accomplished and noteworthy nonexistent artists. The Fake is also considered to be one of Hollywood’s most preeminent comedy venues. Los Angeles magazine described it to be one of the best places to see comedy in the country.

From 7 to 11pm, Synchronicity Space will host a reception for the artists and their guests. There will be complimentary wine and pet snacks.

At 9:00pm The Fake Gallery will present a free special edition of their hit otherworldly sideshow, “The Showatorium”.

From the mushheads who have broughten you such tele/videvisual creambominations as Xavier: Renegade Angel ([adult swim]), Wonder Showzen (MTV), Final Flesh (Drag City) unt Hands of God (God); the soundmares of United We Doth (Birdman Records); the spastic dancing failures of various art attempts and one-offs bedazzling the nations glorious hole, comes the ultimate attempt at re-creating the maullification of our “society”. PFFR presents Legacy IIX.

Godard got through the Louvre in less than 60 seconds. We took it upon, nay, up on ourselves to run through every mall in 'merica in under a minute. The intake was a full frontal assault on our collective mind’s eye, that visually ralphed on the forgotten pages where it hath been discovered by our scientist, nay, our fact fuckers that the dinosaurs do in fact exist. So do we as well and here is the astroidal proof (pre-collision and post-dustings) for your consideration. We’ve swallowed ourselves whole and hope to pass any savings unto your naked chests for this one. This, Legacy VIII.

So, please let us take over, nay, take under the world’s highest hopes/arts to bemuse and extricate the yuckity yucks that are most needed in a time like this. If we can make you laugh, then shame on us. But if we can make you cry, in fear, then let’s hang out more often….

BUCKS FOR BARNABY

COME PARTY FOR A GREAT CAUSE!

One of the sweetest dogs ever, Barnaby Vonderheide (humans are Helen and Katie Vonderheide) has fallen victim to canine oral melanoma. On Friday, March 11th, he had surgery to remove a cancerous tumor from his mouth. As a result, Barnaby has lost his lower mandible.

Leading up to this surgery, Barnaby was given several tests including blood work, urine analysis, and a therasic study. Thankfully, the cancer had not spread and the surgeon is hopeful that he can remove the cancer through surgery.

The culmination of all these tests and Barnaby's surgery have left Helen and Katie with a huge amount of vet bills. This FUNdraiser is to help offset these costs, because we all know that if this was our beloved dog (or cat, or child!) we'd all do the same thing. We're just happy that Barnaby is going to be ok and will give his humans many more years of love.

We'll provide food, open bar and a fabulous line up of entertainment!

Synchronicity Space is pleased to present an exhibition with artists, Aaron Anderson and Eric Carlson titled, "Aaron Anderson & Eric Carlson (ex Hardland/Heartland) Acid Wreath and the Post-Everything Melted Brain Mess /M/Negalith All La LA Land: Beyond the Dead End". The opening reception will take place March 13th from 7pm to 11pm. Concepts addressed by the artists involve Presence, Engaging in experience, Performance (and the lack thereof), Fantasy/Reality, Location and proliferation (physically/virtually).

Aaron Anderson and Eric Carlson are the founding members of Hardland/Heartland, an amorphous collective of creativity stationed in Minneapolis, MN.

Part I

Below, is an email Synchronicity Space received as a "proposal-ish Beginnings" from artist, Eric Carlson.

Hey Katie,

Hope all is well.

We've been a bit slower than I'd hoped in getting something sent out to you, but alas we plan on having the file in the mail by the beginning of next week. There will not be many words in the package, so I am putting those in here.

Our conversations (Our: presently being Aaron Anderson and myself - likely a few more in the future) in light of making work for a show at Sync has loosely revolved around a theme of Manifest Destiny - or - mecCA. lifornia.

This spawns partially from a practice of producing a document for or from the act of traveling. As an example, preparing drawings and photocopies prior to a trip, drawing together during travel, compiling the reoccurring themes and inside jokes composed in process and creating a work/collection of said experience - or for the brief jaunt - creating a work prior to travel to be used as a catalyst for interaction.

More recently, we have been throwing around an idea of going on "tour." In this case we could more appropriately call it, driving to Los Angeles and back again.

This may or may not include:
temporary installations at small town skateparks/parking lots
a performance that may or may not involve any actual performing
a 36 hour mix tape
tour merch
fan art!!!
maximal experience points
long drive inspired bad ideas
and the documentation of all things above

We would intend for the final work(s) to be a multi faceted installation at Synchronicity composed of: performance / implied performance, audio / video, sculptural works?, edition-ed "tour" merch, and works on paper.

We will have a clear idea of what our installation will be beforehand, yet maintain the intention of allowing travel / experience / environments the opportunity to influence the work.

Ideally we would like to have a week or so in Los Angeles prior to installation/ as to allow the environmental influence a chance to weigh heavy on our heads.

Part II

A black painted box 11.5' x 9' x .75'. The box's previous use is not important as all the instructions of "How to use Highland Brand Transparency Film for Copiers" is striked through with a black marker. The black box itself, not unlike that on a plane, holds the evidence and artifacts of a journey that has ended in disaster. The back cover has an image pasted to it, wind patterns in sand and below the image reads,

What it contains:
A violet file folder, more violet then purple. The top right-hand corner has adhered to the edge, a strip of hot pink duct tape that is folded over and continues on the inside. Clipped to it, an image cut out of a book or magazine depicting a warm sunset with shadowed palm trees in the foreground and on the back contains geographical writings that are striked out with a black marker, leaving the only readable words, "the Ring of Fire.” Is this LA as paradise or apocalypse? The next image, a xerox of a dolphin with a cartoon eye and written in pencil "RAPPIST,” a composite that creates a contradiction of its expectations. Cartoon dolphins imply sweet and cute, this "RAPPIST" dolphin is sweetly ignorant and horrifically violent. Next, a 4'x6' glossy Fujicolor Crystal Archive photo with what looks to be four young girls, probably art students - they have that look, exchanging non-descript patterned papers. We are the students, always seeking a deeper meaning in art, in our existence, in nothingness.

The violet folder is lavender inside. The brand name and folder instructions are obscured by gold tape and more hot pink duct tape. The only part that reads unobstructed: "THIS PRODUCT WORKS."

33 loose pages, all different colors ranging from manila, taupe, one hot pink, coral, and one white page. A common motif is the melding and friction between the natural/analog/organic and the artificial/digital, although the bright neon pink and gold tape on the folder and surrounding "this product works" suggests an artifice in everything contained therein. A lot of what's in the folder is full of contradictions: Pixellated oceans, sharp lines intersecting the elegance of nature, satanic bongs, kinky Disney abberations, some images distorted by computers, others by hand.

The purpose of the box is not to answer all the questions we might have about the show, but to create an artifact of a certain time, place and movement that informs the whole of the exhibition. This box presents a mystery, "AARON ANDERSON & ERIC CARLSON ex HARDLAND HEARTLAND ACID WREATH and the POST EVERYTHING MELTED BRAIN MESS /M/NEGALITH ALL LA LA LAND: BEYOND THE DEAD END".

in Celebration of Neighborhood’s Emerging Arts Scene

March 13, 2010 – Second Annual ArtCycle event features great art, bike rides, gallery shows, food and live music

LOS ANGELES (2/8/10) – The East Hollywood Neighborhood Council and the East Hollywood Arts and Culture Committee announce the Second Annual East Hollywood ArtCycle, an event designed to showcase the emerging art and bicycling cultures in East Hollywood. On Saturday, March 13th, 2010 from 2-10 p.m., artists will take over the street in celebration of the art and culture of East Hollywood. This year, the event will be held at Santa Monica Boulevard and Madison Avenue, across from the Cahuenga Branch Library in the heart of East Hollywood and on Historical Route 66.

Also, more than a dozen galleries, theatres, creative venues and artist live/work spaces will open for a celebration of everything East Hollywood.

Hop on a bike to take a tour of some of East Hollywood’s finest galleries, like Synchronicity, Thinkspace and Junc. Check out New Media Artists, see a show at Sacred Fools, check out or just browse among the dozens of artists and performers displaying their creations at the street scene on Santa Monica Boulevard.

There will be plenty of food and live entertainment, including the exotic salsa dancers of Salsarologo and the gypsy jazz phenomenon of KillSonic.

Bring the kids along for arts and crafts, face painting, and lots of hands-on fun. Be sure to bring an old T-shirt for a BYO silk screen.

Come join the celebration as the people of East Hollywood take back the street for a day of art, music, cycling and fun.

The Power of Selection, part 1

Western Exhibitions is pleased to present The Power of Selection, the first in a series of three shows curated by Ryan Travis Christian at the gallery. The show begins on Saturday, January 2 and a public reception, free and open to the public, will follow on Saturday, January 30, from 6 to 9pm. Mr. Christian, who writes for Fecalface.com and selects an Artist of the Day, each and every day, on his Facebook page, organized these shows, the first in January, the second in the summer and the third in December, to increase the circulation of contemporary artwork seen in Chicago by showing works by out of town and/or up-and-coming artists. In this first installment, Christian selected work that takes figuration into strange and bewildering stylizations through the use of drawing, sculpture and video.

Alika Cooper lives and works in Los Angeles, CA and has had solo exhibitions at Mark Wolfe Contemporary (San Francisco), Kim Light/ Lightbox (LA), Hamish Morrison Galerie (Berlin), and Galleria Studio Legale (Rome).

Mike Rea lives and works in Chicago, IL and has shown works at The Contemporary Art Center of Virginia, Madison Museum of Contemporary Art, FFDG (San Francisco), Synchronicity (Los Angeles), Morgan Conservatory (Cleveland) and Hyde Park Art Center. In 2009, Rea was a 2009 West Prize recipient.

Allison Schulnik lives and works in Los Angeles, CA and has had solo exhibitions at 1/9 Unosunove (Rome), Mark Moore Gallery (Santa Monica), Mike Weiss (New York), and Rokeby (London). She also makes stunning claymation video works for the band Grizzly Bear.

Marissa Textor lives and works in Los Angeles, CA and has exhibited works at Subliminal Projects (Los Angeles) The Studio (Los Angeles), and New Wight Gallery UCLA (Los Angeles).

Eric Yahnker lives and works in Los Angeles, CA and has exhibited at Ambach and Rice (Seattle), Jack the Pelican (Brooklyn), Polad-Hardoiun (Paris), Space (Portland), and Kim Light/ Lightbox (Los Angeles) and the Torrance Art Museum (CA).

Ryan Travis Christian is an artist, independent curator and the Chicago correspondent to the art and design website Fecalface.com. Recent curatorial projects include West, Wester, Westest at FFDG (San Francisco), SPORTS at Synchronicity (Los Angeles), and Control C, Control V at EbersMoore (Chicago). He lives and works in Chicago.

We can use clichés, we can reminisce, we can chime again and again, in unison, “Synchronicity!” Perhaps it is overly-sentimental but we just finished up our first year and we’re pretty excited. Being a small operation, we could not have succeeded without the constant, generous outpour of help from artists, musicians, collaborators, colleagues, curators, family and friends. On December 19th, from 7pm until midnight, imagine “thank-you’s” set in a circular motion. Synchronicity Space celebrates its one year anniversary with a silent auction fundraiser. About Beautiful/Decay Book 2!

The artists of "Book 2: What a Mess!" all interpret the idea of "messiness" whether through disorganized methods of displaying work, or rough hewn aesthetics. Others take a conceptually "messy" approach, creating works that cause public outrage, or manipulate typically taboo imagery or themes.

In the spirit of the theme of the issue, Beautiful/Decay got a little messy ourselves, using a playfully "messy" approach to our page layouts, including crumpling photos and creating a custom typeface of childhood favorite construction materials: googly eyes, popsicle sticks and puff balls.

Released 3 times a year, Beautiful/Decay highlights the international contemporary art scene's best and brightest established talents and rising stars alike with a youthful flair. Beautiful/Decay acts as a first exposure sourcebook for untapped, independent creatives from both the art & design world. Blurring the boundaries between "high" and "low" cultures, Beautiful/Decay puts the underground comic artist on the same page as a gallery represented fine artist. Synchronicity Space is thrilled to be hosting “Mental Dynamics,” a group exhibition curated by Toronto-based artist, Stephanie Davidson. Davidson has shown her work with Synchronicity Space in the exhibition, “Dream Sequence,” and recently curated a .gif art exhibition at XSpace Gallery in Toronto including work from Synchronicity Space owners, Chris Gere and Katie Vonderheide. She has studied at the University of Western Ontario, earning a combination Media Studies and Visual Arts Degree as well as just finishing up a 3D course at Sheridan in Ontario. Her work spans from traditional paintings and drawings to new media art such as digital pieces and video. The group of artists Davidson has chosen for “Mental Dynamics” create the freshest, most exciting work exhibiting both in galleries and on the internet.

"chip off the old block" opening

Last Friday, October 23rd, was the opening of our latest art exhibition, "chip off the old block," featuring Halloween masks made by the children of artists. Thanks to everyone for making it a huge success! The masks were amazing, styles ranging from the googly-eyed to the paper-mached, naive to conceptual. A huuuge thank you to Tai from Scoops for donating delicious oreo mascarpone ice cream. We would like to also thank Brain Sucking Peanunanners (featuring 8-year-old multi-instrumentalist Bella) and children of all ages who took over Synchronicity for the night, drawing on the activity wall, making impromptu masks out of Play-doh and otherwise running rampant! For a long time I boasted that I was master of all possible landscapes and I thought the great figures of modern painting and poetry were laughable.

What I liked were: absurd paintings, pictures over doorways, stage sets, carnival backdrops, billboards, bright-colored prints; old-fashioned literature, church Latin, erotic books full of misspellings, the kind of novels our grandmothers read, fairy tales, little children's books, old operas, silly old songs, the nave rhythms of country rimes.

I dreamed of Crusades, voyages of discovery that nobody had heard of, republics without histories, religious wars stamped out, revolutions in morals, movements of races and continents: I used to believe in every kind of magic...

I got used to elementary hallucination: I could very precisely see a mosque instead of a factory, a drum corps of angels, horse carts on the highways of the sky, a drawing room at the bottom of a lake; monsters and mysteries; a vaudeville's title filled me with awe. *

Ola Vasiljeva (Latvia 1981) lives and works in Amsterdam. She is one of the founders of the Oceans Academy of Arts and the publisher of the OAOA magazine. Her work was recently on display at the Beyond Eden Art Fair in Los Angeles, Gallery Art Since the Summer of '69 in NYC and at the Portland Institute For Contemporary Art. Currently Vasiljeva is a resident artist at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten.

Miwa Matreyek is an award-winning animator, designer and multimedia artist who creates animated short films and performance-based installations that manipulate time vs. real time and composed spaces vs. real spaces. Based in L.A., Matreyek is the founding member of Cloud Eye Control, a performance media group that tells stories of human adaptation to a technological society using animation, live camera imagery and theatrical expression. From Here to There Presents From Here to There

A Group Exhibition

From Here to There Presents From Here to There is a group exhibition which runs from September 12 – October 10, 2009 at Synchronicity Space. The show is centered around the theme of transitory spaces which the collective defines as spaces that represent pauses between a range of states or being. Their interpretations include physical locations as well as psychological perceptions or emotional states, including spaces that change people, physically changing locations, or places that people pass through. They are interested in the idea of transitory spaces as symbolic spaces, referencing cultural, social, or personal transitions in time.

The exhibition brings together a variety of interpretations on this theme through mediums such as photography, drawing, and collage. The exhibition includes special programming such as an Antonioni film screening (Saturday, Sept. 19), a performance by Miwa Matreyek of Cloud Eye Control (Friday, Sept. 25), and various musical performances. From Here to There is a collective of artists currently living and working in Los Angeles. Their practices range from photography to collage and include video, sound, and installation. What brings them together is their desire to combine their personal perspectives and various interests to create a greater dialogue through the art that they make. They meet on a bi-weekly basis to discuss ideas both old and new, to hone their practices, and fuel each other through discussions, critiques, and conversations.

Stefan Neville has been making music as PUMICE since he was 16 back in 1991. One man band compositions and improvisations for small silver guitar, drums, endless cassette, intercom and voice. Its always been a struggle. The instruments are wearing out, the guitar gets harder and harder to tune, the tape loops get sicker and the batteries get flatter, but Pumice perseveres.

Adam Willetts:

Based in Christchurch, New Zealand, Adam Willetts uses homemade analogue synthesizers to perform abstract, psychedelic, pop music. He creates richly immersive work with a propulsive sense of momentum, deftly balancing the joyfully lyrical with the ferociously dense.

An important figure in the New Zealand experimental music and sound art community, Adam also plays in the band Grunge Genesis and has collaborated with many of New Zealand's greatest musicians including Bruce Russell (The Dead C), The Renderers, Greg Malcolm, Birchville Cat Motel/Our Love Will Destroy The World, and Phil Dadson.

Metal Rouge:

Métal Rouge was formed in 2006 by Helga Fassonaki and Andrew Scott in Auckland, New Zealand with no aim but to open themselves to the spontaneous psych tonalism running through the underbelly of popular music like a vein of pure lightning. Birthed from the rich history of New Zealand underground music they began to mold a sound comprised equally of the forward motion of ecstatic jazz and the drugged stasis of NYC loft minimalism circa ’66. Using electric guitar, vocals and amplified santur as their primary instruments, they forged a new vocabulary of unrefined free spiritual music. Relocating to Los Angeles late 2006, they toured the states, adding lap steel and pedal steel to their arsenal. Related projects include Yek Koo (Helga solo), Nest (Andrew & Nigel Wright), Golden Krone (Andrew & Rohan Evans) and Huzun (Andrew & Tim Coster). Métal Rouge have releases on Root Strata, Not Not Fun, Stunned, and Digitalis.

Albert Ortega:

Albert Ortega (Dirty Branchez) is a sound wizard who is connected to the most amazing angles of expansive music output in Los Angeles. He is always armed with a smile and inspiring ideas. – Dublab

Albert Ortega collects various resonant objects to prepare both conventional instruments as well as hand-crafted electronics to produce a music that allows listeners to focus on minute undulations or to immerse themselves within a larger sound field. His practice initially began at home then later shared among friends, eventually spreading sporadically around several areas of potential growth.

MONSTERS OF ACCORDION!
An international mob of squeezebox wielding maniacs is launching an all out attack on Eugene. Geoff Berner, of Vancouver, is a self described "Klezmer mongrel" playing his original take on traditional Jewish folk music fueled by his wry, biting humor and more than a few shots whiskey. Former Gogol Bordello member, Stevhen Iancu of Tokyo sings fiery rhythm-driven songs marrying his Gypsy roots with traditional Japanese styles. Eric Stern, the devilishly virtuosic leader of Portland's Vagabond Opera, displays his acclaimed operatic tenor to the accompaniment of French musette, Balkan, and Arabic accordion stylings. These three are joined by infamous accordion howler, Jason Webley, of Seattle. Webley, who organizes the annual tour, is known for his passionate voice, his caterwauling squeezebox and his ability to get a room of strangers to throw their arms around each other and sing with abandon.

Each year, fans of Kate Bush from all corners of the world get together around the time of her birthday, July 30th, and celebrate her life and achievements. Synchronicity Space is pleased to present, “The Sensual World”, a tribute to the artist and her work. Kate Bush seamlessly blends many forms of art into her work, be they musical, visual or dance. Her music videos are innovations to the genre, predating MTV, and capture not just the spirit of a song but the very essence of an artist. Unafraid to branch out experimentally, her music is as grotesque as it is graceful, showing that beauty is multi-faceted and mysterious. Kate Bush continues to be an inspiration and to this group of nine artists, a direct one. The selection of work in this exhibition recreates this eclectic feel, further exploring the vivid setting created in Kate Bush's music, and brings the viewer into the Sensual World.

OPENING TONIGHT!

Synchronicity Space is pleased to present "Sports!", a group exhibition curated by Ryan Travis Christian. In his third curatorial effort, Christian brings together a group of artists who display exemplary ability by way of new art forms. The roster finds a diverse array of ideas executed throughout the media spectrum from upcoming and mid-career artists who live and exhibit outside the Los Angeles area. The work that embodies "Sports!" considers abstraction, portraiture, sex, landscapes, drugs, tools, camping, music, metaphysical concerns, Wheaties, kidnap, paranoia, sports and then some, both literally, metaphorically or otherwise.

HUNTERS AND GATHERERS ZINE LAUNCH

We are so excited about this!
Helga and Andrew of METAL ROUGE are putting out the first issue of their zine, "hunters and gatherers" - on their label seymour records. The Zine will have unusual stories, music reviews, cave-like drawings, raw blurbs, poetry, and artifacts of primitive substance. Each issue will include a 3" CDr of a live band performance. The band featured in the first issue will be VIBES who was the first band to break in our space at the opening of "Ancient Bloody Knuckles".
Also, the records from "Within Heaven's Earshot" will still be on display so anyone not able to make it to the closing will get a chance to see the exhibition before we tediously take down the 300+ albums.

Wearing their religion on their record sleeves

Don Bolles, drummer for the rock band the Germs, collects religious albums. He holds a copy of Pentecostal preacher A.A. Allen’s “I Am Lucifer," whose cover describes it as "an actual recording of a demon spirit that possesses a woman and speaks from within her, using her voice."

An L.A. exhibit of religious album covers from the 1950s, '60s and '70s reflects the post-World War II era of hula hoops and Cold War anxiety, when men still wore starched white shirts to church.

In the 1960s, a stiff-jointed, knee-high doll with brown hair and rosy cheeks named Little Marcy was promoted as a model toddler who sang simple Christian songs on dozens of record albums that sold for $1.98 each.

The albums, which today can be found only in thrift store bins, featured on their covers photographs of Little Marcy and her world.

"Marcy Goes to Nashville" shows her staring at a horse. In "Marcy Sings to Children," she is standing stock-still in front of a microphone and watched by children (real ones) beaming with joy. "Little Marcy with Smokey the Bear" comes with a cartoonish image of her picnicking with forest creatures, including 10 happy skunks.

Depending on one's point of view, the images can be corny or kitschy, well-intentioned or sweet. But no matter the interpretation, they're sure to prompt a reaction, which is why they have earned a place in an exhibit of religious album covers. Titled "Within Heaven's Earshot," the exhibit opens March 13 at Synchronicity Space gallery in Los Angeles.

Exhibit curator Kieran Sala said the 200 album covers -- most produced in the 1950s, '60s and '70s -- were culled from private collections, thrift stores and estate sales.

They are strikingly graphic relics of the post-World War II era of hula hoops and Cold War anxiety, when men still wore starched white shirts and ties to church and religious records were produced on the cheap with the most rudimentary marketing and packaging strategies.

"They're also funny, without intending to be," said Sala, an actor who works as a substitute elementary school teacher in Los Angeles. "These people tried so hard to be hip and cool that they came off seeming incredibly square. We're not trying to embarrass Christians or anyone else, but judging from these album covers, their quest to save souls was often stronger than their proficiency in visual arts."

Examples include charismatic Pentecostal preacher A. A. Allen's "I Am Lucifer," which features a devil with catlike blood-red eyes under this caveat: "An actual recording of a demon spirit that possesses a woman and speaks from within her, using her voice, declaring, 'I am Lucifer.' "

Under the title "Aboard Heaven's Choo-Choo" -- and a drawing of a speeding train moving left to right over their heads -- the five members of the Crawford family, clad in their Sunday best, smile collectively at something off camera in an astonishingly mundane group portrait.

The album "Capt. Hook and his Christian Pirate Puppets" has its subjects in garish costumes (think eye patches and tri-corner hats) and seated on barrels. The liner notes include a "Take it from me!" endorsement by Col. Harland Sanders of KFC fame.

Many of the album covers were borrowed from the religious record collection of Don Bolles, drummer for the rock band the Germs.

For entertainment, Bolles and his guests sometimes gather on the white rug in his one-room Huntington Park apartment to spin selections from albums, such as the eerie "An Esoteric Qabalistic Service," performed by Dr. Ann Davies, and the cartoonish "Adventures of Uncle Moishy and the Mitzvah Men."

Then there is "Diary of an Unborn Child," an anti-abortion tract performed by Mark Fox in the child's voice of his persona, Lil Markie. It opens one day in April with the newly conceived Lil Markie announcing, "I will be a boy with blond hair and blues eyes." It closes on "Dec. 28" with him declaring, "Today, my mother killed me."

Then Lil Markie sings, "Why did you kill me, Mommy, when God made me special for you?"

"That one's intense," Bolles said on a recent weekday.

Later he put on his turntable "Little Marcy Visits Smokey the Bear," which Bolles described as "one of the most twisted collaborations between fundamentalist Christians and a federal government fire prevention program I've ever seen."

All of the records in his collection -- be they Christian, Jewish, Bahai or metaphysical -- have one thing in common.

"It's hard to find a well-worn copy of any of this stuff," he said. "Unlike old James Brown records, which are always worn out, these albums seem to have been played once."

The exhibit's emphasis, however, is the cover art, not the music.

Some of the albums were vanity projects. Most were produced by a handful of companies based in Los Angeles, Waco, Texas, and Grand Rapids, Mich., home of Zondervan, a 75-year-old international Christian communications company that once cranked out as many as five Little Marcy records a year.

But Little Marcy's creator, Marcy Tigner, was only one of many Christian ventriloquists making records at the time.

Another was Gail Wenos, who still runs a Temecula ministry featuring the inspirational humor of her dummy, Ezra. Wenos, whose records will be on display at Synchronicity Space, acknowledged that the images look anything but modern.

"But you have to realize," she said in an interview, "we're talking about record albums made in the dark ages, when women wore aprons and the most popular show on television was 'Father Knows Best.' "

Even Wenos chuckles at the sight of her first album, "Gail and Ezra: Joy, Joy, Joy," released in 1972.

"There I am on the cover," she said, "against a Christmas green-and-red background and wearing a Swiss dress with hearts on it. I look like a teenage Disney character, except I was 25.

"It was a hoot and a half to make that record, which sold for $3.49," she said. "I just hope people understand that it wasn't just a different time. It was a different world."

In a wistful tone, she added: "Things were simple. Innocent. Wholesome."

Next Saturday 2/28 we will be having a closing reception for our current "Dream Sequence" and also be participating in the East Hollywood ArtCycle. The East Hollywood Neighborhood Council will be closing the north end of Heliotrope(near Scoops and Pure Luck) and there will be live music, food, artist tables and even one of those jumpy things! We are so proud to be participating in this event and really believe in its purpose. East Hollywood is a great place to be! So come and bike, walk, metro to our neighborhood on Saturday. At Synchronicity we will be hosting events all day long starting at 2pm. Live music from Warm Climate and Sleepwalkers Local(not in that order, maybe separate, maybe playing together) and either art or music from Sumi Ink Club / Lucky Dragons. And most importantly you can see our show before it comes off our walls.
